1st Day of Week 5

Well, I'm at week 5 today. At least until I have my appointment and see if they change my due date.

What's going on with me today? Well, I've been having some cramping (as I have for about 2 weeks now). This has been making me nervous, but as long as I don't have any spotting, I'm okay with it. I'm pretty tired- like considering laying down on my office floor for a quick nap tired. I've been going to bed as early as possible every night, which is basically unheard of for me. I've been eating breakfast every morning, but I an starving by 9:30! I don't really want to eat lunch at that time, so I'm planning to bring some snacks from now on. I think if I start eating soup or roast beef sandwiches everyday before 10:00 people are gong to start getting suspicious. Especially around my office, where if you sneeze the gossip mill starts about how you might be pregnant.

I definitely want to wait as long as possible to tell my work that I'm pregnant. I'll probably tell my work friends at 12 weeks (unless less I get morning sickness, then they might figure it out a little early!), and then tell the rest of work around 20 weeks. Waiting that long might be hard though!!!!

We are planning to tell our parents and siblings pretty soon. I wanted to feel a little more confident in this little poppy seed before I tell anyone, but I don't think we'll make it too much longer. Especially because any family gathering usually involves having some drinks and I will get called out if I'm not drinking. =) I know everyone is going to be very excited, and they might have a hard time keeping it a secret for the rest of the twelve weeks.

There are some things that I have been thinking about a lot. I want to make sure that this is as healthy pregnancy as it can be for me and the little guy. I want to get in some form of exercise everyday. Tuesdays and Thursdays I've already been hitting the gym, so I think I will just try to get in a long walk on the other days. You know, when I'm awake long enough! I also want to make sure I'm eating healthy and getting all the right nutrients. I tend to go a bit heavy on the sweets and eat fast food a little too much. So, while I by no means plan to cut all the "good stuff" out completely, I'm aiming for getting a little better.

Off to scavenge for food!

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

Well hello! I know it's been a while, like 3 months, but I have NEWS! I'm pregnant. Woot! We have been trying since Jan. and it finally happened.

I know this is supposed to be a weight loss blog for me, but I need to get this news out there, and we aren't telling anyone yet. I'm sure we'll be telling our parents in the next week or so, but right now it's killing me a little.

Here's our little journey up to today...

In January there were some major changes at my work and I knew that I would be moving from a full time 2 year temporary internship to a full-time. This was the one thing that S and I were waiting for before we wanted to start trying. For the first two months we didn't worry too much. Then I started to look into trying to conceive. In April we decided to start charting. I tried charting and temping, but didn't have much success with the temping part, because I didn't have a consistent morning schedule and it was making the temps inaccurate. Around this time we heard from one of our friend couples that they were pregnant, and that they had started trying in Jan. too and got pregnant that month. It was kinda a shot in the heart to hear how easy it was for them.

So, we kept charting and hoping that it would happen. I got pretty sick in August with mesentry lymphadentitis and it threw my cycle off. The doctors had originally thought that it was either an appendicitis or a burst ovarian cyst. Because of this, I had blood work and an ultrasound. Nothing like having the doctors confirm multiple times that you aren't pregnant when that's all you want to be! I figured that my next few cycles would be off, so I wasn't too worried about my chart, but we continued trying. I had a short cycle in August and wasn't too disappointed. Come Oct. I knew that I should be getting my period, but figured my cycle might be off still. On day 33 of my cycle I started to get suspicious and checked my chart. I was having some crampy feeling in my abdomen, but passed it off as leftover issues from the adentitis. It looked like there was a chance I'm might be pregnant though, so I decided to wait one more day and take a test.

I came home from work the next day, and couldn't wait to test. I took one test and saw a VERY faint second line. From having taken many a test, I knew that just because it was faint didn't mean that I wasn't pregnant- usually there was a devastating nothingness in the space where you hope for a second pink line. Well, I was freaking out, so I showed S and ran upstairs to take another one, in hopes that it would be darker. Um, yeah, it looked exactly the same. So S went to buy a digital test to easy our nerves and I hopped online to see what I could find about the second line being super faint.

I took the digital test after several hours, and it came back with a no! I was a little freaked out, but decided to retest with the second one in the morning so I would have FMU. When I woke up and took the test, it still said no! So I went out and bought 2 different brands of regular test and took one of each at work with SMU. The second pink line and the blue cross showed up! They were still faint, but definitely darker than the first time.

So, we decided that this was probably for real. SQUEEEE!!!! I tested again this morning with each brand of test, and while they still aren't super dark lines, both sets were darker than they were yesterday. I called and made my first appointment- it was really weird saying "I'm pregnant" out loud to someone other than my husband! I go in at 8 weeks, so 3 weeks from tomorrow. Yikes!

So, we're officially pregnant and ready to start this crazy journey! I hope to use this blog mostly to journal this experience, but also to share my experience with anyone who wants to listen and possibly to keep S's parents updated on any news, since they live 6 hours away.

One Week In

Okay, so it's been about a week. I have to get used to this blogging thing and make a little bit of time for it each day. This week has been a bit of a struggle. I did pretty well during the week logging my food (I use sparks people), but once the weekend hit I was done for. I think that the rehearsal dinner/ wedding/ family in town combo was a bit much. I really struggle with "Special Occasions".

Why is that? What is it about someone else's wedding or having family members in town that makes me eat like there is no tomorrow? Food has always been a big part of our family celebrations. Your birthday? You get to pick a special dinner. Well, my birthday is coming up and I've already decided that I will be picking healthier versions of my favorites. So homemade taco salad (no shell) with light Western dressing and angel food cake for dessert.

I can't undo this last weekend, though I do wish I could. I had plates full of heavy food at the rehearsal and wedding, though I did skip the cake. But skipping out makes me feel deprived and like I'm drawing attention to myself. One of my goals is to work on portions control. I would like to take that piece of cake and have a few bites, then set it aside! The wedding party, which my husband S was a part of, consisted of quite a few skinny girls. Every one of them was "full" and pushed aside her plate before it was close to being finished. Ahhhh, if I can achieve that level of self-control I will be very happy!

The other thing I struggle with is eating out. Whenever my inlaws come to town we eat out at least 1 meal. I love eating out, so I really appreciate that they do this, but it is really a struggle for me to eat "healthy" when we are out. I guess it feels like one of those special occasions and I should splurge. I know that I have to change this way of thinking. There are most likely plenty of things on the menus that I could eat with out going overboard and I'm sure I would like them just as much as my usual favorites. I need to start creating new favorites!

I did manage to get in 1 workout. Not the 3 I was planning on, but at least it was something. This is something I frequently do- plan on working out, then let any little thing come in the way of hitting up the gym. I am the only one who can changes this and all it will take is a little bit of self-discipline. Baby steps me, baby steps.

Next up- Goals. Some large, some small, but LOTS of goals.

A Fresh Start

I have been a blog reader for about a year now. I hadn't really planned on ever starting a blog, but I have BIG weight loss goals in mind and I thought this would be a great place to get everything that is in my head down. I'm not really doing this so that I have a bunch of followers, but more as an online journal that I can post my plans, failures and successes, pictures and any ideas that I find to help me along the way.

I'll start this post by telling my "story". I currently weigh 198.4 lbs. This the highest I have ever been and WAY to close to my dreaded 200 lbs mark for me to sleep comfortably. I'll have to go back a few years to really explain my journey.

In 2000 I began college at a very athletic 130 lbs. At 6 ft tall, this is a skinny weight on my frame. I started that fall as a track and field athlete. Having done sports year round my whole life, the daily practices did not cause me to lose any more weight. In fact, because I was doing much more lifting than I had in the past, I put on 5- 10 lbs per year for the first 4 years I was in track, but I wasn't worried about the gain. Throughout my time as a Heptathlete I had various injuries, the worst of which was stress fractures in my left (power) foot. I sat out a season, but my foot never felt the same again. By my last year I was practicing much less to try to prevent any further injury to my body and I gained another 10 lbs. I was put on a strict diet by my coach, but it didn't really change anything (probably in part because I had a really hard time following the diet and I didn't change my drinking habits). Up until this point I had been pretty happy with my weight.

After my I received my undergrad degree, I moved to a different city to begin law school. From the moment I began classes, I HATED everything about law school. I went from being part of a team and having lots of close friends to knowing no one and being in constant competition for grades. As a competitive person I thought I would like this part of law school, but instead I just felt like a failure when I didn't understand a concept and didn't have anyone to turn to to help. By the end of my first semester I did make one very good friend. If it wasn't for this friend I might have quit school all together. We began training for a local half marathon. We participated in the half a week before our first year of school ended. Training with my friend was fun, but long distance running is not my thing. And because of the amount of miles we put in, I was eating way to much to lose any weight.

During this time I also moved in with my boyfriend/fiance and we began to plan our wedding. I felt stressed about everything in my life and spent most of my time sitting on my couch in a depression (often with food in hand). By the time our wedding rolled around I hadn't managed to lose any weight and I felt pretty horrible. I laugh now, because 172 lbs is sounding pretty fabulous! I was not horribly out of shape, but needed overall toning and to drop a 10-15 pounds.

Over the last 3 years I have put on more than 20 more lbs. I started a 2 year paid internship at the university athletic department in my town as a compliance officer. It was a huge relief to be done with school and I wanted to try to get my life back together. About a year ago I started taking medicine for my depression. I was hopeful that I would be one of the people that would lose weight (a possibility according to the side effects!), but if anything I felt that I was having more trouble losing any weight or even maintaining my current weight. Somehow all of this just caused me to want to dive right into more food!

In October, after years of pain in my left foot and going long stretches with out working out, I went to my doctor demanding answers. I was told to rest my foot for a few months and come back. So I held off any exercise through out the dreaded holiday (eating) season and a move into a new house- during which I gained another 10 lbs. In January I went back ready to get my answers. After a clear x-ray I was sent to an orthopedic surgeon. I had an MRI done on my foot and it was determined that I had a Morton's Neuroma and an Occult Ganglion. At this point I scheduled surgery and was told it was my choice if I wanted to exercise, but I could do more permanent damage to my foot, so I decided to hold off until the surgery was finished.

My surgeon continually guaranteed that my recovery would only be about 2 weeks after the surgery and that I would be back to running within a month. After scouring the Internet for stories from other people who have had the surgery (for the Neuroma- the Ganglion combination is unusual and I didn't find anything similar), I didn't believe him, but felt I didn't have much choice in the matter. The surgery was successful and my nerve and the ganglion were both removed. After the surgery I was informed that the surgery was much more extensive than was originally expected because of the size (5 cm x 1 cm) of the ganglion and its location. I took several days off of work, then was on crutches for few more weeks before I was even walking on my own in a surgical boot. I began psychical therapy and saw some improvement to my foot and withing 2 1/2 months of surgery was finally cleared to do minimal exercise. A work friend and I started hitting the gym at our work facilities, but I had to start slooooow. I was only allowed to use an elliptical, so I would do about 5 mins on the lowest level before having to stop.

It's now July, and I am allowed to do any exercise I want as long as I'm careful not to injure my foot. I have continued to use the elliptical 2 times a week for 20-30 mins. This clearly NOT enough, as I am at my heaviest weight ever and no easy way out in sight.

Well, this post is ridiculously long, so I'm going to call it quits. I ahouls have some posts soon about some plans I am putting in place to lose the weight and get into better shape and hopefully some before pics and stats. Woo hoo!
